February has been a beautiful late summer month here at A Deer Cottage Bed and Breakfast in Kaukapakapa, Auckland. Te Kani and I were fortunate to attend two lovely weddings this month, and with love in the air we are now preparing to welcome wedding guests throughout March.

And today holds special meaning for us personally — we are celebrating our 27th Wedding Anniversary. After nearly three decades of doing life together, we are reminded that marriage is built not only on the big celebrations, but on the everyday moments — shared cups of tea, weathering storms (sometimes literal ones!), raising children, welcoming guests, and watching sunsets side by side. It has been a privilege to grow, adapt, laugh, and build a life together here at A Deer Cottage.

In 2019, we chose to renew our vows right here at A Deer Cottage, surrounded by the hills that have become such a part of our story. I wore the very same dress I had made 27 years earlier, and the headpiece my late mother wore when she married my father on the 2nd of March 1957. That day was made even more special because this time, all four of our children were there to celebrate with us. It was a beautiful full-circle moment — honouring the past, celebrating the present, and looking forward to the future together.

Perhaps that is why hosting wedding guests feels especially meaningful to us. We understand that behind every wedding day is the beginning of a lifelong journey.

Back at the cottage, February has brought spectacular sunsets stretching across the hills. The gardens continue to flourish in the warmth, and the rhythm of country life carries on (as also the weeds!)— ducks wandering, chickens clucking, and the quiet hum of nature settling in at dusk.
