February has been a whirlwind here at A Deer Cottage, with guests making the most of our peaceful retreat overlooking the stunning Kaipara Harbour. While they’ve been enjoying all that we have to offer, I’ve been busy with a bit of a refresh—sanding back our outdoor furniture, the bath couch I built, and even the outdoor bath itself. It’s been a labour of love, but now everything looks brand new again, ready for more guests to enjoy.
Meanwhile, Te Kani has been tackling another big job—sanding back, repainting, and removing rust from our trusty tractor. While it’s still a work in progress, getting started on the problem is a big step forward. Maintaining these essential tools takes time, but it’s worth it to keep everything in top shape for the years ahead.
This month has also been extra special, as we’ve had our baby grandson visiting from Australia with his parents. Their month long stay gave us the perfect excuse to slip away to Bland Bay in the Bay of Islands, soaking up some family time, cuddles, and coastal adventures. Moments like these remind us how important it is to slow down and cherish the simple joys.
While our daughter was here in New Zealand, we marked the anniversary of my late Mum’s birthday with a memorable walk along my old stomping grounds—from Milford Beach to Takapuna. My sisters and I, along with our daughter, took in the familiar sights, stopping for a special photo on the giant’s chair just down from Thornes Bay Beach. It was a meaningful way to honour Mum’s memory, sharing stories as we walked. Back home, we made the most of the warm weather with plenty of swims in our pool, creating even more cherished family moments.
When I haven’t been hosting guests or restoring furniture, I’ve been indulging in my love of crafting. I recently designed a pattern and made some beautiful shirred dresses for my granddaughter, who turns three in June. I’m thrilled with how they turned out! Next on my project list is a sweet little cotton jumper for her—knitting needles at the ready.
Our guests have also been making the most of the tranquility here, especially with visits from Nadia, our wonderful travelling massage therapist. There’s nothing quite like a relaxing massage in our dedicated Massage Cottage, surrounded by birdsong and the soothing hum of cicadas—pure bliss.
