August Reflections: A Month of Creativity and Remembrance

As August comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on a month filled with creativity, transformation, and heartfelt memories. This month, we’ve been busy breathing new life into our beloved outdoor spaces, making each project a tribute to the beauty of the land and the memories it holds.

One of our most exciting undertakings was transforming an old farmyard bath into a unique piece of garden art. After carefully cutting it out, we revitalised it with fresh paint, turning it into a charming focal point in our pond area. To make it even more inviting, I crafted cushions for the soft furnishings. These cushions now adorn not only the outdoor bath but also our giant chair and the farmyard tractor wheel chair, adding a touch of comfort and colour to our outdoor spaces.

In addition to these projects, we’ve been planting up the area with some beautiful papyrus grass that was generously given to us. The pond itself is starting to take shape as I began edging it with rocks, each stone carefully placed as part of this ongoing transformation. The pond area is a work in progress, but it’s more than just a garden project. It’s a living tribute to my very dear friend and bestie who, many years ago, dug out the pond, built a swing chair, and contributed to so many projects here. Every step in this process is a way to honour the incredible memories we shared and the lasting impact they had on this place.

A mutual friend of ours, who shared a deep bond with my bestie, has also been instrumental in helping us create some truly special additions to the pond area. His latest creation is a beautiful sign crafted from swamp kauri, and an old saw that belonged to my bestie, and antique gate hinges made by a blacksmith.

The sign reads He Wāhi Whakatā, which is Māori for "A place to rest." This meaningful piece was delivered to us recently, and in the next blog post, I’ll share where we’ve chosen to place it by the pond. It’s a beautiful tribute that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of this space.

I’m excited to share photos of our garden as well—a space that, like the pond area, is always evolving. The garden is a reflection of our ongoing efforts to create a peaceful, beautiful environment that brings joy and serenity.

Looking ahead to September, we have another Shiatsu Retreat planned at A Deer Cottage, which we’re eagerly anticipating. We’ll also continue our work on the pond area, making progress little by little, just as we have been.
