April at A Deer Cottage – Finding Calm in the Midst of Uncertainty

April has been a quieter, more reflective month here at A Deer Cottage Bed and Breakfast in Kaukapakapa, Auckland— one that has reminded me just how important it is to slow down, breathe, and take things one day at a time.
We had been so looking forward to travelling to Australia this week to celebrate our youngest daughter’s 26th birthday and our grandson’s 2nd birthday. As many of you will understand, time with family — especially little ones — is incredibly precious.
However, life doesn’t always go to plan. Following advice from my specialist, I have had to put travel on hold for now while I wait for further appointments. It has been a difficult decision, and the disappointment has been very real, accompanied at times by anxiety and concern as we navigate the unknown.
Taking Life a Little More Gently
For now, I’ve been encouraged to take things slowly — to avoid too much exertion and to keep life as calm and stress-free as possible. While that can be easier said than done, it has also been a gentle reminder to return to the small, meaningful things that bring comfort and joy.
I’ve found myself spending time on sewing projects for our granddaughter’s upcoming 4th birthday in June — quiet, creative moments that bring a sense of purpose and calm.

Even light time in the garden, when the weather allows, has been grounding. A little weeding here and there, fresh air, and the familiar rhythm of caring for our space has been surprisingly restorative.
I also found a bit of joy in creating something a little different — after picking up a lovely outdoor bird feeder and a metal deer from an op shop, I decided to combine the two. With a few carefully drilled holes and a bit of creativity, it has become a quirky and charming new bird feeder for A Deer Cottage. It’s these small, hands-on projects that bring a sense of satisfaction and lightness to the day.
Small Joys Close to Home
There have also been some lovely highlights here at A Deer Cottage.
We were so pleased to have our beautiful new sign created by Signville, a talented local company based nearby in Helensville and also part of our wider Kaukapakapa community. From the very beginning, they understood exactly what we were hoping for and brought our vision to life with creativity and care. The finished result is something we are incredibly proud of — a sign that truly reflects A Deer Cottage. We couldn’t be happier with their workmanship and highly recommend them to anyone looking for quality, personalised signage.
Kani and I are looking forward to putting it up over the coming days.
Inside, I’ve created a new display space for very special treasures — Kabuki and Kokeshi dolls gifted to me by our daughter in law, during our recent time in Japan. They now sit proudly in a cabinet, bringing a sense of beauty, culture, and cherished memories into our home each day.

And sometimes, joy is found in the simplest of outings — like heading out this evening with a group of lovely local girlfriends to see The Devil Wears Prada 2. A reminder that laughter, connection, and a change of scenery can do wonders for the soul.
A Time to Pause and Remember
April also brings with it a meaningful moment of reflection with ANZAC Day. It is always a special and moving day here in New Zealand and Australia — a time to remember and honour the men and women of the armed forces, past and present. Taking a moment to pause and reflect adds another layer of perspective and gratitude during this month.
A Place to Rest and Restore
This month has deepened my appreciation for what A Deer Cottage Bed and Breakfast in Kaukapakapa offers — not just to our guests, but to us as well. If you wish to find out more about A Deer Cottage you can do so through here
It is a place of quiet.
A place to pause.
A place where you can sit with a cup of tea, listen to the birds, and allow yourself to simply be.
For anyone going through a time of uncertainty, stress, or simply needing a peaceful escape from busy life, having a calm space can make all the difference. Our North Auckland accommodation continues to be a place where guests can rest, recharge, and reconnect.
Looking Ahead with Hope
While this chapter has been challenging, I am learning to take each day as it comes — to focus on what I can do, rather than what I cannot, and to hold onto hope as we wait for answers.
We are so grateful to continue welcoming guests to A Deer Cottage, and it brings us great joy to know that others can come here to find a little calm of their own.
If you are needing a gentle escape — whether for rest, reflection, or simply a change of pace — we would love to host you here at A Deer Cottage Bed and Breakfast in Kaukapakapa, Auckland.
Until next time,
Warm wishes,

Angela & Te Kani 🦌❤️🦌
